Course Overview

The PECB Lead AI Risk Manager training course is built for professionals who need to get serious about managing AI-related risks in their organizations. This is not a surface-level overview. The course goes deep into how to identify, assess, treat, and monitor risks tied to AI systems, covering everything from algorithmic bias and security vulnerabilities to ethical concerns and regulatory compliance.

The training draws on three major sources: the NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF), the EU AI Act, and the MIT AI Risk Repository. You will learn how to set up AI risk governance structures, build risk treatment plans, and create incident response protocols that actually work in practice.

Throughout the five-day program, you will analyze real case studies from the MIT AI Risk Repository. These are not hypothetical scenarios. They are documented AI failures and risk events that organizations have faced, and you will learn what went wrong and how it could have been prevented.

By the end of the training, you will be prepared for the PECB Lead AI Risk Manager certification exam, which is held on Day 5. Microtek Learning, as a trusted PECB partner, delivers this course with experienced instructors who bring both technical depth and practical industry experience to the classroom.

Why attend this training

AI adoption is accelerating across every industry, and the risks are growing right alongside it. Models that produce biased outputs, systems that lack transparency, data pipelines with security holes, new regulations that carry real penalties: these are not future problems. They are happening now.

Traditional risk management methods were not designed to handle the unique challenges AI creates. AI systems can behave unpredictably. They can discriminate without anyone intending it. They can fail in ways that are hard to explain, even for the teams that built them. Managing these risks requires specialized knowledge.

This training gives you that knowledge. You will learn how to use established frameworks (NIST AI RMF and the EU AI Act) to build risk management programs that hold up under scrutiny and meet compliance requirements. You will also earn a certification that carries weight in the industry. The PECB Lead AI Risk Manager credential tells employers and clients that you can lead AI risk management efforts at an organizational level.

Whether you are a risk professional expanding into AI, a data scientist who wants to understand governance, or a leader making decisions about AI adoption, this course fills a gap that most organizations desperately need covered.

What you will learn

  • Understand the foundations of AI risk management. You will learn the core concepts, terminology, and approaches used to identify, assess, and mitigate risks that are specific to AI systems. This includes understanding why AI risk is different from other types of technology risk.
  • Identify and analyze AI-specific risks. You will know how to spot risks like algorithmic bias, security vulnerabilities, transparency gaps, and ethical concerns in AI systems. More importantly, you will learn how to analyze these risks to understand their likelihood and potential impact.
  • Build risk treatment and incident response plans. Identifying risks is only half the job. You will learn how to develop practical mitigation strategies and incident response measures that address AI threats and vulnerabilities before they cause damage.
  • Apply major AI risk frameworks. You will gain working knowledge of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and the EU AI Act. You will know how to use these frameworks to establish governance structures, maintain regulatory compliance, and support ethical AI practices within your organization.
  • Analyze real-world AI risk scenarios. Through case studies drawn from the MIT AI Risk Repository, you will examine actual AI risk events and learn what worked (and what did not) in how organizations responded to them.

Who Should Attend This Course?

This course is designed for a broad range of professionals who work with or around AI systems:

  • Risk management professionals who want to add AI-specific expertise to their skill set
  • IT and cybersecurity professionals looking to understand the security dimensions of AI systems
  • Data scientists, data engineers, and AI developers involved in building, deploying, or maintaining AI systems
  • Consultants who advise organizations on AI strategy, governance, or risk mitigation
  • Legal professionals and compliance officers working on AI-related regulations and ethical standards
  • Project managers and team leads overseeing AI implementation efforts
  • Senior executives and decision makers who need to understand AI risks at a strategic level and make informed choices about AI adoption

No matter your role, if your work touches AI in any way, this course will sharpen how you think about the risks involved.

Prerequisites

You should come in with a basic understanding of AI concepts, like what machine learning is and how AI systems work at a general level. A general awareness of risk management principles is also helpful.

If you are familiar with AI governance frameworks like the NIST AI Risk Management Framework or the EU AI Act, that is a plus, but it is not required. The course covers these frameworks in detail, so you will build that knowledge as you go.

There are no formal educational or experience requirements to attend the training.

Training Approach

This course balances theory with hands-on practice. Every concept is backed by real-world examples that show how AI risks play out in actual organizations.

The training includes scenario-based exercises where you will work through AI risk situations and develop responses. There are also quizzes throughout that mirror the format of the certification exam, so you get comfortable with the question style before exam day.

Discussion and collaboration are a big part of the experience. You will exchange ideas with other professionals, which often turns out to be one of the most valuable parts of the training. The instructors encourage questions and are there to connect the theory to whatever challenges you are dealing with in your own organization.

Exam and Certification

The certification exam takes place on Day 5 of the training. It covers five domains:

  • AI risk principles, concepts, and regulations
  • AI risk management program and governance
  • AI risk identification and analysis
  • AI risk evaluation, treatment, and monitoring
  • Organizational learning and performance improvement

The exam is administered by PECB and meets the requirements of the PECB Examination and Certification Program.

After passing the exam, you can apply for one of four credential levels, depending on your professional experience:

  • Provisional Manager. No experience required. You just need to pass the exam and sign the PECB Code of Ethics.
  • AI Risk Manager. Requires 2 years of professional experience (at least 1 year in AI risk management) and a minimum of 200 hours of AI risk management activities.
  • Lead AI Risk Manager. Requires 5 years of professional experience (at least 2 years in AI risk management) and a minimum of 300 hours of AI risk management activities.
  • Senior Lead AI Risk Manager. Requires 10 years of professional experience (at least 7 years in AI risk management) and a minimum of 1,000 hours of AI risk management activities.

All credential levels require signing the PECB Code of Ethics. Certification fees are included in the exam price.
