Course Overview

Most people meet AWS through the console: hundreds of services, a search box, and no obvious place to start. This one-day course gives you a map, then makes you use it.

Instead of touring services one at a time, you build up a single application across the day. It is a company employee directory, and it starts as something that runs on one server. You secure access with IAM, launch the application on Amazon EC2, rebuild it inside a VPC you create yourself, work with S3 storage, and finish by configuring it for high availability. You then see how the same application would look as a serverless design.

Along the way the course covers the fundamentals AWS groups under compute, storage, networking, databases, monitoring, and security. You compare EC2, Lambda, and the container services (Amazon ECS and Amazon EKS), you learn when RDS fits and when DynamoDB does, and you see why storage choices such as instance store, EBS, and S3 behave so differently.

The course is hands-on from the first module, and it is written for people who work with technology rather than only talk about it. If you are new to AWS and need to make informed technical decisions about it, this is the right starting point. AWS also lists it as recommended preparation for several of its more advanced technical courses.

What you will learn

  • Explain core AWS security concepts and use IAM to control who can do what
  • Tell the AWS compute services apart, including EC2, Lambda, ECS, and EKS, and choose between them
  • Launch an EC2 instance and manage it through its lifecycle
  • Build a VPC and explain its routing and security
  • Compare AWS storage types, including EC2 instance storage, Amazon EBS, and Amazon S3
  • Describe the database offerings, including Amazon RDS and Amazon DynamoDB, and when each suits a workload
  • Configure an application for high availability, including EC2 Auto Scaling
  • Describe how the same application could be redesigned as a serverless architecture

Who Should Attend This Course?

  • Developers who are new to AWS and need to build or deploy on it
  • SysOps administrators and system administrators moving workloads to AWS
  • Solutions architects who want hands-on grounding before designing on AWS
  • Technical professionals who need to explain what AWS services do and why they matter
  • Anyone preparing for AWS technical courses that recommend Technical Essentials first

Prerequisites

You do not need previous AWS experience. It helps to arrive with:

  • Basic IT knowledge: servers, networking, databases, and applications
  • Familiarity with Windows or Linux
  • A general idea of IP addressing, DNS, and firewalls
  • Comfort following step-by-step instructions in a technical lab

Exam and Certification

AWS Technical Essentials is not an exam preparation course, and there is no AWS exam with this name. What it gives you is the practical grounding that AWS certifications assume. If a credential is your goal, pair it with AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials, which is the course aligned to the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam.

📘 AWS Technical Essentials Outline

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

No. Cloud Practitioner Essentials gives a broad, largely non-technical overview of the AWS Cloud and is the course to take for the Cloud Practitioner exam. Technical Essentials is the hands-on one: you launch instances, build a network, and configure storage and high availability yourself. Many people take both, in either order.

No. The course is about understanding and configuring AWS services rather than writing application code. Some comfort with technical concepts such as IP addressing and operating systems makes the labs smoother.

It is the sample application used throughout the day. You first host it, then launch it on EC2, rebuild its networking inside a VPC, add storage, make it highly available, and finally look at how it would be redesigned in a serverless way. Using one application means each service shows up as a solution to a real problem instead of a feature in a list.

It builds relevant foundation, but it is not exam preparation, and the exam covers areas this course does not, such as pricing and support plans. If you are aiming for the certification, take Cloud Practitioner Essentials and use AWS's official exam prep resources.

It depends on your direction. Architecting on AWS is the next step if you design systems, Developing on AWS if you build applications, and Cloud Operations on AWS if you run them. AWS also lists Technical Essentials as required or recommended preparation for several technical courses, including Practical Data Science with Amazon SageMaker, MLOps Engineering on AWS, and Advanced Generative AI Development on AWS.

For its purpose, yes. It is designed to orient you across the core services with real practice, not to make you an expert in any one of them. You leave knowing what each service is for and how the pieces fit together, which is the foundation every AWS course after it builds on.

AWS delivers its course labs through AWS Builder Labs, and attendees may need an Amazon Builder ID to access them. Your joining instructions will confirm the setup, and it is worth completing before class day.
