Knowing what AWS services do is one skill. Deciding which ones a workload needs, and how they fit together, is another. Architecting on AWS is a three-day intermediate course for people who do the second job: solutions architects, solution-design engineers, and developers who want to understand how AWS solutions are designed.
AWS-authorized instructors teach it around the AWS Well-Architected Framework and real-life scenarios. Across the three days you cover account security, networking, compute, storage, databases, monitoring, automation, containers, serverless architecture, edge services, and backup and recovery, with the aim of building solutions that are resilient, secure, and highly available.
Seven hands-on labs run through the course. You start in the AWS Management Console and AWS Command Line Interface, then build an Amazon VPC infrastructure, add a database layer, configure high availability, build a serverless architecture, and set up an Amazon CloudFront distribution with an Amazon S3 origin. A capstone lab ends the course. You build a multi-tier architecture from a scenario in an environment that provides partial solutions, and you deploy a highly available design. The instructor is available for consultation.
This is not an entry-level course. AWS recommends that you complete AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials or AWS Technical Essentials first, and that you already have working knowledge of distributed systems and multi-tier architectures.
AWS lists people seeking the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification among the intended audience for this course. The exam is separate and is booked and paid for on its own.
The current exam is SAA-C03. According to AWS, it is for people who perform a solutions architect role and validates the ability to design solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework. AWS recommends at least 1 year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services.
