Course Overview

Most applications do not have one data problem. They have several, and forcing all of them into a single database is how teams end up with slow queries, awkward workarounds, and a scaling bill nobody can explain.

This one-day course takes the opposite approach. You work with AWS purpose-built NoSQL databases and learn to match each one to the access pattern it actually suits: DynamoDB for key-value workloads, DocumentDB for document data with MongoDB compatibility, and ElastiCache for Redis for in-memory work.

The structure is consistent across all three. For each database you review a realistic business workload, analyze its access patterns, build a data model around them, and design for performance, then apply that thinking in a hands-on lab. Along the way you use NoSQL Workbench for DynamoDB table design, the DocumentDB aggregation framework, and Redis data structures chosen for the job rather than out of habit.

Event-driven architecture runs through the day as a second theme. You work with change streams in both DynamoDB and DocumentDB, wiring them to AWS Lambda so downstream systems react to data changes rather than polling for them.

The labs are the substance of the course: fleet and trip data management on DynamoDB, user profile data on DocumentDB, and geospatial searches, profile caching, and leaderboards on ElastiCache.

What you will learn

  • Build modern cloud applications using AWS purpose-built NoSQL databases
  • Illustrate solutions for key-value, document, and in-memory data categories
  • Analyze business use cases and apply advanced Amazon DynamoDB features to build a scalable solution
  • Analyze business use cases and apply advanced Amazon DocumentDB features to build a scalable solution
  • Analyze business use cases and apply advanced Amazon ElastiCache features to build a scalable solution
  • Implement event-driven architectures using change streams and AWS Lambda
  • Use AI-assisted coding to build solutions faster

Who Should Attend This Course?

  • Database developers building applications with complex data characteristics
  • Solutions architects and technical architects choosing between data stores
  • Database engineers working on applications with millisecond performance requirements

This course suits people already working with modern IT solutions that involve NoSQL data, particularly where an application has several distinct access patterns to serve.

Prerequisites

  • Familiarity with cloud computing concepts
  • Familiarity with data modeling for relational or NoSQL databases
  • Working experience with Amazon DynamoDB table design
  • Working experience with Amazon DocumentDB design
  • Working experience with ElastiCache for Redis
  • Familiarity with AWS Lambda and Amazon API Gateway
  • Familiarity with Python scripting

These prerequisites are heavier than the one-day format suggests, and they are worth taking seriously. The course covers advanced features across three databases and does not stop to teach the basics of any of them. If one of the three is unfamiliar, expect to spend that section catching up rather than learning the advanced material.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

That question is the course. DynamoDB handles key-value and high-scale transactional workloads. DocumentDB suits document data where MongoDB compatibility matters. ElastiCache for Redis covers in-memory work such as caching, leaderboards, and geospatial queries. Rather than teaching rules, the course works through business use cases so you learn to read an access pattern and choose on evidence.

It is, because the course assumes you already know these services. The prerequisites ask for working experience with all three. What the day adds is advanced feature depth, data modeling practice, and the judgment to pick the right tool. If you are new to NoSQL on AWS, build that foundation first.

Change streams let your application react to data changes as they happen instead of polling for them. The course covers them in both DynamoDB and DocumentDB, connecting each to AWS Lambda. It is one of the more practically useful patterns in the syllabus, since it underpins most event-driven designs.

Not directly. It is a skills course rather than exam preparation, and the closing module points you toward the AWS certification levels. The DynamoDB and data modeling content is useful background for AWS database and developer certification paths.

A lot, for a single day. Three hands-on labs plus guided tours across all three databases, alongside presentations and group discussion. The labs use realistic scenarios rather than toy examples.

It is AWS's term for using a database matched to the workload instead of a single general-purpose engine for everything. The first module covers the portfolio and the design decisions behind choosing among them, which sets up the rest of the day.
