What does an ISO 37301 Lead Auditor actually do?

A Lead Auditor plans and directs audits of compliance management systems, either as a third-party auditor for a certification body, as a second-party auditor assessing suppliers, or leading internal audits. The role covers the whole engagement: scoping the audit, managing the team, gathering evidence, judging conformity against ISO 37301, and reporting the findings.

Can I audit for a certification body after this course?

This training and credential are a major step in that direction, and the course explicitly covers the ISO/IEC 17021-1 certification process that conformity assessment bodies follow. Certification bodies set their own additional qualification requirements, so treat this course as the foundation rather than the final box to tick.

Should I take Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer?

It depends on which side of the audit table you sit. Lead Implementer trains you to build and run a CMS inside an organization. Lead Auditor trains you to assess one. Many senior GRC professionals eventually hold both, but start with the one that matches your current role.

I'm new to auditing. Is this course too advanced?

The course assumes prior knowledge of audit principles and ISO 37301 (or ISO 19600). If you are starting from zero on the standard, the ISO 37301 Foundation course is the better entry point. If the standard is familiar but your experience is thin, you can still attend, pass the exam, and hold the Provisional Auditor credential while you build audit hours toward the higher tiers.

Course Overview

An organization can claim its compliance management system works. Only an audit proves it. As more organizations certify against ISO 37301, demand is growing for auditors who can assess a CMS competently, and this PECB course trains you to be one of them.

Over four days, you will learn to plan, conduct, and close a full CMS audit using the auditing guidelines of ISO 19011 and the certification process defined in ISO/IEC 17021-1. The training covers the complete audit lifecycle: interpreting ISO 37301 requirements through an auditor's lens, gathering and evaluating evidence, interviewing auditees, reviewing documented information, leading an audit team, drafting nonconformity reports, and writing the final audit report. You practice all of it through case-study exercises, role plays, and scenario-based quizzes drawn from situations inspired by real audits.

Day five is the PECB certification exam. Pass it, and you can apply for the internationally recognized PECB Certified ISO 37301 Lead Auditor credential. The training can also put you on the path to auditing on behalf of conformity assessment bodies.
